The Navy has promoted Michelle Janine Howard to the rank of three-star vice admiral, as she stepped into her new role as deputy commander of the U.S. Fleet Forces headquartered in Norfolk, Va. She becomes the first African-American woman to achieve that rank. This is the latest in a string of firsts for Howard, who was the first African-American woman to command a warship, the first female Naval Academy alum to reach the rank of rear admiral and the first African-American woman to be in charge of an Expeditionary Strike Group at sea. fuckyeah-nerdery: Captain Tejdeep Singh Rattan, one of the small number of Sikh-Americans serving in the military. Granted, he’s a dentist, but cool anyways. One downside: The military has rules about religious clothing and accessories and the Sikhs have had to petition the military for the right to wear turbans while in uniform. I like his turban. I just wonder if he had to special order it or if the army did?

Tax breaks for the wealthy and corporations? That’s a-ok! Why are students complaining? Working 3 jobs to pay back student loans is the American dream.

I’m just bringing this back now that Paul Ryan has been picked as Mitt Romney’s VP choice. In a country where an incredible number of people are going bankrupt because they can’t pay back their student loans, the Republican ticket includes this guy. Students can’t afford a Romney/Ryan win.

Interviewed by an investigator after the incident, Trooper Cole can be heard trying to explain his decision and his actions. “Prior to deploying your Taser, did you give a verbal warning that you were going to use it?” he was asked.                                          “No, I did not,” says Trooper Cole. The FDLE found Cole’s actions justified, because troopers said Maudsley was running toward traffic along Highway 19, and might have caused an accident. Link for full story
